William A. Spalding, Los Angeles journalist and civic leader, came to Los Angeles in 1874. He was business manager of the Daily herald and city editor of both the Evening express and the Los Angeles times (1886). He became a vice-president of the Los Angeles times. Spalding engaged in fruit growing for several years and was one of the organizers of the California Fruit-Growers Exchange.
